September/October

We are off to a fantastic start to the year! Students have been busy learning new routines, making new friends, organizing and adjusting to 4th grade. It has been a busy, exciting few weeks and we hope your child is off to a positive start. It's been a pleasure to meet parents during conferences and share our goals for the year. Here's to the best year ever!

Language ArtsStudents have been demonstrating Reading and Writing skills through a District Wide Assessment. We are building a literary vocabulary that will serve as a common language for literature discussions throughout the year. We are working on writing traits through night write sharing, journal entries, writing workshops and short stories. Our goal is to foster a love of reading and writing so that students will take risks this year and unleash their potentials in a nurturing environment.

Social Studies:  New Jersey.  We began our unit with a K, W, L exercise (What students Know, Want to know, and Learned) about New Jersey. Students completed the "K, W" portion. We will revisit the "L" at the end of the year so students can see their own progress. We have been learning about New Jersey State Symbols and are beginning an introduction to the uses of maps. What is history? That question will be discussed this month as we look at the various resources used to gather historical information. We will be taking a trip to South Mountain Reservation to locate historical markers and monuments that directly tie into our unit on historical sources and local history.

Math: It is that time of season for partial sums, differences, products, and quotients.  Please be patient and hang in there because Mrs. Pomernanc and Mr. Jones will be holding a review session for all students and parents.  The next unit will involve estimation.  You can review concepts such as rounding, problem solving using estimation, and different mathematical expressions using all four operations.

Science:  We have begun our Solar Systen unit.  We are having a blast!  Students will be exploring relative sizes and distances of planets as well as learning about pertinent information about the planets.  Hold this date:  11/14/08.  We will be going to New York to the Hayden Planetarium.  Please have all money and permission slips handed in by 10/17/08.  We need to give Hayden Planetarium a deposit to hold this date.  We are looking forward to exploring the natural wonders that are out of this world.
